NYFS Psychoanalysis Programs
Candidates' Organizations

Each Candidates' Organization (CO) in NY and DC functions independently of the Training Institute, and provides a forum for candidates in the Psychoanalysis Programs to express their ideas, questions and concerns in matters related to training. In addition to the ongoing dialogue between the independently elected candidate representatives and the Training Committee concerning administrative issues pertaining to candidates, more advanced candidates serve as an important source of informal guidance for newer students. Our meetings help generate a sense of community and support, and are an essential part of the training experience.

In our bi-monthly Candidates’ Organization meetings, candidates may formally or informally discuss any issue related to training. We also use our meetings to plan programs of interest to candidates. In 2004 we held a panel discussion in which senior members of NYFS described the evolution of their careers, and the ways in which theory influenced their clinical practice. Using the same format in 2005, we hosted a co-sponsored event with NYFS-DC candidates.

In addition to our semi-annual meetings, our listserve also encourages communication and connectedness among NYFS-DC candidates. It allows for a continuous flow of information and opinions relevant to candidate concerns. The president of our CO serves as a representative of the candidates at meetings of the Washington Division members, facilitating communication between candidates and members.

In 2003, the NYFS-DC Candidate Organization sponsored a symposium on working psychoanalytically with victims of childhood sexual abuse. We have worked with the NYFS–NY Candidate Board to improve a sense of community among all of the candidates. In 2003, we hosted a colloquium for DC and NY candidates of NYFS on Psychoanalytic Process. We also work in conjunction with candidate groups from other psychoanalytic training institutes in the Washington-Baltimore area on projects such as the Joint Institutes Candidates' Committee Annual Symposia, as well as organizing informal get-togethers.
