Sailing in Rough Waters: When Supervision Becomes Difficult
Presenter: Judy Kantrowitz, PhD
Discussant: Judith Felton, LCSW

A central dilemma for candidates in the management of self-esteem in supervision is the conflict between the desire to gain a deeper understanding of their patients and their responses to them, and the narcissistic vulnerability that inevitably accompanies such learning. This conflict may be particularly heightened in older students who are already seasoned clinicians and who want to become more and differently skilled. We propose and illustrate some approaches to this dilemma in supervision.

Judy Kantrowitz, PhD, is a training and supervising analyst at the Boston Psychoanalytic Institute and an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School. She is the author of two books, The Patient's Impact on the Analyst and Writing about Patients: Responsibilities, Risks, and Ramifications, as well as papers on the patient-analyst match, the outcome of psychoanalysis, and supervision. She has served on the editorial board of Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, and is currently on the editorial board of The Psychoanalytic Quarterly.

Judith Felton, LCSW, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in Manhattan, where she works with adolescents and adults. She is a training and supervising analyst, and chairperson of the Progression Committee, at the Psychoanalytic Training Institute of NYFS. She is also on the faculty of the Metropolitan Institute of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.
